01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

One of the standouts on Sakaki’s menu is its okonomiyaki, named Kyoto Nishijin-yaki. The batter is made with bonito flakes and combined with Kujo spring onions and Kyoto pork; a softly set egg topping goes on next, followed by dashi sauce with yuba, nama-fu and fried tofu. It also comes with colourful pieces of fu and bubu arare rice crackers. The layers of Kyoto-style ingredients give this pancake a character distinct from more familiar okonomiyaki.

One visitor ordered an okonomiyaki with mochi, bacon and cheese, a combination also listed on the menu. It makes for a substantial option alongside pancakes with pork, squid, beef or mixed fillings. On the same visit, the diner also had pork yakisoba, fried chicken and gyoza. Yakisoba comes with options including pork, squid, beef, mixed ingredients and pork kimchi; it can also be changed to yaki-udon or ordered as a large portion. Okonomiyaki is the natural centrepiece, but teppan-grilled dishes and fried sides offer plenty of ways to build out the meal.

One solo diner reportedly paired okonomiyaki with gyoza, chicken wings and a pork-kimchi dish, along with beer and highballs. Drinks include beer, sake and fresh-squeezed lemon chūhai, and all-you-can-drink courses are available. It’s an izakaya suited to sharing several dishes over dinner or settling in for a longer gathering with drinks.
